Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the role of mental toughness and autonomic functions in athletes' adherence to challenging sports. The research method was applied in terms of purpose and descriptive-correlational according to the category of studies. The statistical population included all male and female athletes who were active in challenging disciplines in Iran in 2021, and according to the research method, 455 Athlete participated voluntarily with at least one year of sports activity. The results of Pearson correlation showed that there is a moderate and significant relationship between mental toughness and autonomy with athletes' adherence. According to the regression model, %14.7 of the variance of adherence is explained by mental toughness and %22.7 by the variance of autonomy. According to the results of path analysis, the variables of mental strength and autonomy have a direct and positive effect on adherence. Also, based on the results, the variables of mental toughness and autonomy explain 30.3% of the variance of adherence.
