Abstract

Understanding the underlying cognitive components of sports performance is one of the topics investigated in recent years. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of online cognitive training on working memory and inhibition, and the subsequent changes in shooting performance during the lack of training period caused by the Corona quarantine. At first, 30 novice male shooters aged 18- 24 years, who did not participate in shooting exercises due to the Corona prevalence, were evaluated by recording at a distance of 10 meters, and were divided into two experimental and control groups through matching based on the initial record. Athletes in the experimental group participated in online-cognitive training based on attention and working memory using the cognitive training Maghzineh-application for 24 sessions. In both groups, in order to check the effectiveness of the intervention, in addition to the shooting record, the CPT and n-back tests were used. The results showed that cognitive training caused a significant improvement in the omission (P=0.001) and commission errors (P=0.01) and the correct numbers (P=0.01) in the CPT test, as well as a significant improvement of the commission error (P=0.01) in the N-back test. This training has significantly (P=0.0001) prevented the drop in shooting performance during the lack of training period. Based on this, it seems that online-cognitive training are a suitable method to improve core executive functions, which subsequently has a positive effect on shooting performance, and can be used as a suitable method in special situations such as quarantine.
