Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors affecting adherence to sports activities in teenagers.
Methods: This study was conducted using qualitative research method with thematic analysis approach. For this purpose, data was collected using semi-structured interviews with 24 interviewees including 12 male athletes and 8 adolescent female athletes and 4 of their coaches in Yazd city. All interviews were recorded and then transcribed and analyzed using thematic analysis method.
Findings: The research findings were placed in three categories of social and psychological support, motor competence and motivation. Social and psychological support also included the influence of parents (psychological support, transportation, being a role model, financial support and being a spectator), the influence of teachers (expertise, ethics and personality, interaction with parents), the influence of friends (making friends, being with friends), the influence of the media and social networks (motivation, modeling and learning). Movement competence included real movement competence (having talent, developing, suitable physical body) and perceived (belief in one's abilities, approval of the coach, awareness of one's weaknesses and strengths) and motivation also included two components of internal motivation (interest, pleasure and fun) and external motivation (becoming professional and having a goal, health and fitness).
Conclusion: According to the results of the research, it can be concluded that adherence to sports activities in teenagers depends on various factors, and by considering these factors, it is possible to create the habit of doing sports activities in teenagers on a permanent basis.
