Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the psychometric properties of the role strain Questionnaire of Junior athletes. The present research method was descriptive. A statistical sample of 230 athletes (108 girls and 104 boys) from different sports disciplines with an age range of 12 to 18 years from Nahavand city (Iran), who participated in the present study by direct sampling method, and the role strain questionnaire for junior athletes, which was prepared by translation-re-translation method by sports psychology specialists, was completed. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to estimate the validity and determine the factor structure. The reliability of the questionnaire was also calculated using Cronbach's alpha coefficient. SPSS and Amos version 23 software were used for data analysis. The results of factor analysis on all questions of the questionnaire led to the extraction of five factors (overload pressure in sports and between roles, ambiguity, overload pressure in school, underload pressure, and conflict), that explained 52.25% of the variance of the entire questionnaire. The value of Cronbach's alpha coefficient for the whole questionnaire was 0.85 and for the components of overload pressure in sports and between roles, ambiguity, overload pressure in school, underload pressure, and conflict, respectively, 0.84, 0.83, 0.67, 0.73, and 0.67 were obtained, which indicates that it is generally highly reliable. The Persian version of the RSQ-JA can be a valid and useful tool for coaches and teachers to identify periods of high and low pressure by tracking and monitoring role strain over time.
