Abstract
Purpose: The present study employed a descriptive-correlational design and was conducted as field research. The statistical population consisted of all eligible athletes in football, volleyball, taekwondo, and track and field in Fars Province in 2025. Data from 230 athletes were analyzed as the final sample. The research instruments included the Sport Perfectionism Questionnaire, Sport Resilience Questionnaire, Athlete Burnout Questionnaire, and Coach Support Questionnaire. Data were analyzed using hierarchical regression and structural equation modeling in SPSS and AMOS.
Findings: The results showed that sport perfectionism had a positive and significant relationship with athletic burnout (β = 0.43, p < 0.001), whereas resilience (β = -0.30, p < 0.001) and coach support (β = -0.24, p < 0.001) had negative and significant relationships with burnout. Moreover, the interaction effects of perfectionism × coach support (β = -0.18, p < 0.001) and resilience × coach support (β = -0.14, p < 0.001) were significant. Simple slope analysis indicated that coach support weakened the positive relationship between perfectionism and burnout and strengthened the negative relationship between resilience and burnout. The final model explained 49% of the variance in athletic burnout.
Conclusion: The findings demonstrated Maladaptive perfectionism may increase burnout, whereas resilience and coach support mitigate this effect. Therefore, creating supportive sport environments and providing resilience skills training can be effective strategies for preventing burnout and promoting athletes’ mental health.
