Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of competitive anxiety and self-confidence in prediction of burnout of elite Wushu athletes. Research design was descriptive-correlational. 141 questionnaires were completed by Wushu athletes. In this study, The Persian version of competitive state anxiety inventory-2 was used to measure cognitive anxiety, somatic anxiety and self-confidence also the Persian version of athlete burnout questionnaire was utilized to assess burnout. Data were analyzed by using multivariate regression and Pearson correlation tests. The results showed that correlation between cognitive-somatic anxiety and self-confidence with factors of burnout were significant. Also, multiple regression analysis showed that factors of competitive anxiety and self-confidence predict %32 variations of reduced sense of accomplishment, % 48 variations of emotional/ physical exhaustion and % 51 variations of depersonalization. According to the results, self-confidence can reduce burnout. But competitive anxiety has inverse influence. In conclusion, to reduce burnout of elite Wushu athletes teaching self-confidence improve orientation strategies and decrease competitive anxiety can be recommended.
