The popularity of electronic sports (e-sports) is increasing rapidly in recent years. But most people regard e-sports as a threat to psychological and physical health of gamers, while e-sport fans deny such claims. Therefore, the present study was conducted to investigate the effects of e-sports on cognitive abilities of planning and decision making in gamers. Physical education undergraduate students (40 participants, mean age=20years, all male) who had not previously played the video game FIFA were selected and randomly assigned to two groups, namely the game group and the non-game group. Planning ability was measured using Tower of London (TOL) task and decision-making skill was assessed in Iowa Gambling Task (IGT). The results indicated that the participants in the game group outperformed the participants in the non-game group in terms of both planning and decision-making skills. Based on the results of this study, e-sports can improve the cognitive skills of decision making and planning.
