Objective: The present study aimed to predict binge eating based on body appreciation and body compassion with the mediating role of physical activity in women.
Method: The research design was descriptive-correlational. The statistical population consisted of all overweight female students enrolled in public universities in Tehran in 2025, from whom 250 participants were selected through convenience sampling. The research instruments included the Binge Eating Scale, the Body Appreciation Scale, the Body Compassion Questionnaire, and the Health-Promoting Lifestyle Profile (physical activity subscale). Data were analyzed using structural equation modeling.
Results: The results indicated that the indirect path coefficient between physical activity and binge eating through body compassion was significant (β=-0.075, p<.01). Furthermore, the indirect path coefficient between body appreciation and binge eating through body compassion was significant (β=-0.093, p<.01).
Conclusion: The findings demonstrated that physical activity plays a significant mediating role in the relationship between body appreciation and body compassion with binge eating. Higher levels of positive body-related attitudes were associated with lower levels of binge eating through increased physical activity. Accordingly, designing interventions aimed at enhancing body compassion and body appreciation alongside structured physical activity programs may serve as an effective strategy for the prevention and reduction of binge eating among overweight women.
