Objective:The aim of the present study was to translate, validate, and examine the psychometric properties of the Persian version of the Sports Commitment Questionnaire-2 and to test its relationships with constructs from Self-Determination Theory and Social Exchange Theory in Iranian athletes.
Methods: 450 Iranian athletes (280male,170female) aged 15 to 35 years (Mean = 21.4, SD = 4.2) were selected using convenience sampling. The translation and cross-cultural adaptation process was conducted following the guidelines of Beaton and colleagues (2000) in five stages. Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) was used to assess construct validity, while Cronbach's alpha coefficients, McDonald's omega, and test-retest reliability were used to assess reliability. Convergent and discriminant validity were evaluated by examining correlations with constructs from Self-Determination Theory, and Social Exchange Theory.
Results: The results of confirmatory factor analysis confirmed the 12-factor structure of the SCQ-2 in Iranian culture. Model fit indices and all factor loadings were significant. Test-retest reliability (ICC = 0.86) indicated good temporal stability. Sport commitment showed significant positive correlations with basic psychological need satisfaction, and intrinsic motivation, Furthermore, the sources of commitment collectively explained 78.5% of the variance in enthusiastic commitment and 60.2% of the variance in constrained commitment.
Conclusion: The Persian version of the Sports Commitment Questionnaire-2 has favorable psychometric properties in the population of Iranian athletes and can be used as a valid and reliable instrument for measuring sport commitment in related research. The confirmed relationships with constructs from Self-Determination and Social Exchange Theoris support the validity of the model in Iranian culture.
