English

Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the role of civil society organizations in rebuilding social capital and its structural–cognitive dimensions in the university sports community.
Materials and Methods: This study is applied in terms of purpose and descriptive-correlational in terms of method. The statistical population consisted of all lecturers and undergraduate students at Islamic Azad Universities in Tehran Province who participated in university sports activities. Given the limited size of the population, a census method was used, and 380 valid questionnaires were collected and analyzed. To analyze the data, the normality of the distribution was first examined using the Shapiro–Wilk test; due to non-normality, Spearman's correlation coefficient was used. The content validity of the questionnaire was verified by experts, construct validity was examined through confirmatory factor analysis, and reliability was confirmed using Cronbach's alpha.
Findings: The results showed a positive and significant relationship between the overall activity of sports civil society organizations and social capital (r = 0.44, p < 0.01). All dimensions of civil society organizations' activity (participation, awareness, trust, and effectiveness) also had a positive and significant relationship with different dimensions of social capital (social trust, social participation, social networks, social cohesion, and norms of cooperation), and all research hypotheses were confirmed. At the structural level, sports civil society organizations strengthen horizontal ties among heterogeneous university groups by creating bridging networks and providing a platform for voluntary participation in sports activities. At the cognitive level, these organizations foster the internalization of cooperative norms by producing shared meanings, a university sports identity, and mutual trust. Confirmatory factor analysis also indicated a good fit of the measurement model and acceptable factor loadings for all dimensions.
Conclusion: Sports civil society organizations play an effective role in rebuilding and promoting social capital in the university sports community by strengthening participation, awareness, trust, and effectiveness. Therefore, policymaking to support these organizations and facilitate voluntary sports activities in universities can contribute to rebuilding the structural and cognitive dimensions of social capital.
